Don’t Call John, Call Charly – Retro Pop Never Sounded So Sweet

Shake Off by Charly Haze

Charly Haze is back, and honestly I’m still recovering from her last brilliant track. But here she is again, and her new single Shake Off? That one screams retro no, drenched in retro. A full 200%, to be precise.

The nostalgia oozes from every layer, but somehow like only Charly can it still sounds fresh, vibrant and completely her own. It's as if she’s picked up a new lens, giving us a new angle on a world we thought we already knew. She reshapes the familiar into something personal and alive.

This woman is a creative force, no question. And that shows not just in the music, but in the visuals too. The video mirrors the track beautifully: dreamy, rich in texture, and full of quiet attitude.

And no she still hasn’t shaken me off. Not even a little. Everything’s there again to earn a top spot in my favourites list.

Her voice doesn’t just sit on top of the production it flows through it. It colours every corner of the sound. There’s tenderness in her tone, but also precision. The lyrics? They hit softly but land deep. And let’s be real: where would we be without love?

For anyone with a taste for nostalgia and clever pop songwriting, this is pure pleasure. The magic still flows and with every new track Charly drops, that connection grows stronger.

Her signature synths are layered with care, wrapped in that sugary-smooth vocal delivery. Then she folds in some 80s guitar licks, wavey pulses and bang there’s that edge. And yes, you read that right: she picks up the guitar and bass here too. It adds weight, texture, depth. It doesn’t distract from the electronic core it elevates it.

Even though it all feels electronic at first with ticking clocks and swirling synths Shake Off throws in something unexpected. The track feels richer. Fuller. And those lyrics? They pretty much speak for themselves. I could try to explain them but really, just listen. The music does the talking.

Once again, Charly Haze gives me that feeling. The one that never really left… and probably never will.

Bring on the Poly Pop EP, out September 4th. Five stars for the track. Five for the video. That’s a 10 in my book.

Charly Haze calling.

I didn't want to keep the video from you either so I posted it here as well.

And as icing on the cake here is her video clip.

I went a little further this time and spoke to her as well but made a podcast of it right away.

In it we go a little deeper and hear the background of this track.

I already wrote the review for the podcast and you have already heard her during the Mixtape Show.
